Hello There

My name is Jose Luis Dorado. I am a mathematician, a computer scientist & a data scientist based in Barcelona.

About

More About Me

I graduated in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science in 2018. After finishing my Mathematics degree, I moved to the UK where I joined a research project at Cardiff University involving probability theory, statistics, Bayesian Analysis, metaheuristics, and Machine Learning. I came back to Barcelona in 2021. I recently finished a bootcamp in Data Analytics at Ironhack, and I am willing to join a company where I can apply the knowledge I adquired during my research, the skills I have got during the Ironhack's boot camp, and my strong background in Mathematics and Computer Science to Data Science projects.

Personal statement

I graduated in Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science in 2018. After finishing my Mathematics degree, I moved to the UK where I joined a research project at Cardiff University.

That project was a collaboration with Airbus, and its ultimate goal is to optimize the jig twist of an aircraft wing. During my time at Cardiff University, I was very interested in probability theory, statistics, Bayesian Analysis, metaheuristics, and Machine Learning. The first part of my work was to model data provided by Airbus, and the first theoretical chapter of my thesis explains the regression problem from the learning theory point of view. The second part of my work was to tackle an inverse design problem using MCMC sampling and metaheuristics. The second theoretical chapter of my thesis explains the theory of the aforementioned methods, and gives a novel framework for design optimization.

During the pandemic, I came back to Barcelona where I wanted to pursue an academic career. I have been working as a maths and computer science teacher ever since, and I have got a permanent public job. However, my career plans have changed. I am not pursuing an academic career anymore and, therefore, I do not find a meaning for my current job. I am willing to leave my job to join a company where I can apply the knowledge I adquired during my research and my strong background in Mathematics and Computer Science to Data Science projects.

I recently finished an intensive bootcamp in Data Analytics at Ironhack to complement my academic knowledge with relevant technolgies and tools used by private companies such as Python language; Pandas and Numpy libraries; web scrapping tools such as the Requests library; visualization tools such as Matplotlib library or Tableau; or Machine Learning tools such as PyTorch library.

Portfolio

Some of my projects

gmapsdatalib

Python library to get information from google maps.

gmapsdatalib is a library to get information from google maps using their APIs. This library has been written in Python language and has been created to do a project involving some data analysis about the restaurants in Barcelona city. The library, however, was created to be used in any other project (for getting information from google maps about places in a certain area).

Airbus Toolbox

Toolbox creted to optimize the jig-twist of an aircraft wing.

This toolbox was created to solve a forward problem (with a Gaussian Process surrogate) and an inverse problem (with Stochastic Optimization) to optimize the jig-twist of an airplane wing.
It is not possible to share the code because of a confidential agreement. However, some tests that were done before the final toolbox version and use a two modes surrogate can be found here.

CodeSheet App

App for managing characters when playing rpg/tabletop games online.

This App was created during the pandemic for managing characters when playing rpg/tabletop games online. The App was written in Java.

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to enthusiastically support the application of JOSE LUIS DORADO LADERA for your fellowship. José Luis has been a bright student of the BSc in Mathematics of the Universitat de Barcelona. During this period I was his teacher in several computer science courses (Algorithms, Data Mining) during 2 semesters.

José Luis earned superior grades in those classes. He tackled all aspects of his coursework, whether technical or intellectual, with determination and success. He was an exceptional student, among the 1% best I have seen in Universities and Institutes where I have been.

José Luis shows a great deal of maturity. He is confident and exhibits a high degree of professionalism when relating with his colleagues. He is a talented individual and a quick thinker. He has also been innovative in his work. In all my dealings with him he has also demonstrated excellent communication skills. I have no doubt that he has much potential for a distinguished career in research.

It is satisfying to be able to give him my highest recommendation. I hope this information proves helpful.

Reference for Mr Jose Luis Dorado Ladera

Jose Dorado Ladera enrolled onto a postgraduate research programme at Cardiff University in January 2019 and expects to submit his MPhil thesis during 2020. His project, sponsored by EPSRC and Airbus and supervised by Dr Abhishek Kundu and myself, covers multidisciplinary robust optimization of early-stage aircraft wing design under uncertainty.

The project proved an ideal opportunity for Jose to apply his strong mathematical skills to practical engineering problems. Using data supplied by Airbus, he has made significant advances in stochastic optimization while applying machine learning techniques to the solution of large-scale problems.

Jose has proved to be an effective team worker, providing advice to his fellow students and assisting in undergraduate teaching. He has also prepared and delivered excellent presentations of his research at both internal seminars and international conferences.

Jose is a conscientious student, keen to understand new concepts and to find his own solutions to problems. He takes a professional approach to his studies and communicates well in written and spoken English. He has thought carefully about this next stage in his career and I believe he has the ability to succeed in it. I strongly support his application for admission.

Reference Letter for Jose-Luis Dorado-Ladera

To Whom It May Concern

I have interacted with Jose-Luis a few times in the past months, in particular since he attended some of the seminars organised by the School of Mathematics, and since he came to my office to discuss some questions about Mathematics and Machine Learning.

As far as I can say, Jose-Luis is an enthusiastic, motivated and serious student. His interest in Data Science and Machine Learning is real and his scientific skills are good. If Jose-Luis feels stimulated by the project he will be involved in, I have no doubt regarding his ability to achieve a successful PhD. I therefore strongly encourage you to consider his application.

Also, his proficiency in written and oral English is very good.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this letter to wholeheartedly recommend José-Luis as an outstanding student in the Data Analytics / Machine Learning course at Ironhack during the summer of 2023. I have had the privilege of teaching José-Luis for the duration of the nine-week course, and I can confidently attest to his abilities and dedication.

José-Luis's technical capabilities are truly impressive. He grasped complex concepts swiftly and exhibited a remarkable ability to apply them in real-world scenarios. I was pleased by his aptitude for leveraging his strong background in mathematics and computer science to solve challenging problems and develop innovative solutions.

I have no doubt that José-Luis has a very promising future in the field of Data Analytics or Machine Learning. I highly recommend him for any academic or professional opportunities that he may pursue in the future.
